BANQUET NEWS:

51st Annual Banquet a Success!

Tuesday February 26th 2002

By Paul Karla--Club Secretary

The Club's 51st annual banquet was held on Tuesday February 26th at the American Croatian Lodge in Eastlake, Ohio.  Approximately 625 ardent Outdoor enthusiasts braved the cold and snow to attend and make the banquet a great success!  Thirty-five people chose the "bus" option, hosted by Ken Dawson. They enjoyed free beer and a safe convenient ride to the Banquet.

The final figures are not in yet, but by all indications this year's banquet was the best fundraiser yet!  Thanks go out to the generous supporters and organizations who donated to the Club for this event.  We were pleased to have members of the ODNR, D'arcy Egan and Award Winners Bob Askew, the "Man of the Year" and Jim Faddoul the "Presidents Award" in attendance.  In addition, representatives from Gander Mountain, Schoney Charters (Jim Schonauer), NRA (Phil Grey), Fishing Fever Charters (Ray Henry) and other exhibitors made added to the excitement of the event.  Rob Wallace demonstrated our new Web Site throughout the evening.

The Club offered an exciting new banquet format this year which included an expanded Silent Auction featuring beautiful Wildlife Prints, Autographed Sports Articles and other unique items.  In addition to the usual high quality "Members Only" and Raffle Prizes, New Raffles and Side Games were added for the attendees.  The Main Raffle, for the first time, included an opportunity to participate in the "High Roller" game.  This game offered three additional High Quality Prizes for those who purchased the new $50 and $100 ticket books.  Response to the new format was enthusiastic!

The Grand Prize of a $3000 shopping spree at Gander Mountain was won Rick Siegfried, a guest at the table of Ken Kuentz!  Club member Lee Billi won the exciting 50/50 raffle and went home with over $1600!  Once again, a New Member won big on the "Members Only" drawing.  This time, it was the Grand Prize Remington 11-87 shotgun!  It pays to be a member of The Woods and Waters Club.  A total of 25 new members signed up for membership during the evening.

Although there were a few difficulties with the new additions to the Banquet, everyone had a good time sharing in the fun and fellowship of the evening.  Proceeds from the Banquet will go to The President's Scholarship Fund and other worthwhile programs.

Finally, we especially wish to thank Dan Forrester, the Banquet chairman and the committee whose hard work made this event possible.  The committee included Paul Karla, John Schubert, Jim Faddoul, Kit Kimmich, Ken Dawson Joe Post, Roy Seese, Ray Hunt,Jim Calagaris, Rick Frano, Dennis Krachovil, Terry Kosmata, Geoff Carter, Gerry Chomos, Jay and Cathy Kowalczyk, Frank Gron, Greg Bappler, Bill Switaj, Joe DiGiacomo, Lou Sharpe, Ed, Chris and Bob Kovac and Rose and Meggan Forrester and all the other members who made this Banquet successful.

INSIDE COVER

The President’s Scholarship fund was fathered by Mr. Harry L. Davis with the encouragement of many of the Past Presidents of the Woods and Waters Club.  Its single purpose is to make possible the aiding of young people in the acquisition of learning that would help in the maintenance and improvement of our collective outdoor heritage.

It has as its first purpose the awarding of grants and perhaps loans to worthy students pursuing outdoor related subjects such as forestry, park management, botany, wildlife management, fisheries management and other similar subjects.  To aid the Foundation in its selection process The Cleveland Scholarship Foundation was contracted as our screening agency.  Each year starting with the second year of its existence the earnings from our invested principle funds have been used to award two scholarships to local students.

Your contribution to the fund will make it possible to continue the work of the foundation and the Woods and Waters Club.  The foundation is a 501.c.(3) tax exempt group.  This means that all contributions to it are fully tax deductible.  FOLLOW THE LEAD OF YOUR BOARD AND MAKE YOUR 2002 CONTRIBUTION TODAY.   Send your check to:

PRESIDENT’S AWARD :    Jim Faddoul

The Woods and Waters Club of Northern Ohio is pleased to present the “President’s Award” to Jim Faddoul.  Jim is a native of West Virginia and proud of it. A 1964 graduate o West Virginia University, Jim’s love of hunting and fishing comes from living on the Ohio River, hunting rabbits and squirrels close to his home in Sisterville.  After graduating as an aerospace engineer, Cleveland became home. With his wife Betty, three sons and a daughter, family became his full time interest.

Jim was active in the local hockey program.  Eating and sleeping at the ice rink was a learned habit as the boys were hockey rink rats.  At the same time, his career with NASA at Lewis Research Center, now Glenn Research Center, provided opportunities to work on everything from windmills to the Space Station.  Two of the most notable projects include the air tanks which most emergency crews now wear as part of their backpacks and the resurgence of large wind turbines, made possible, in part, by laminated wood technology.  With the family growing and/or gone, hunting and fishing tugged once again at Jim’s heart and began to occupy more of his time, in the late 1980’s, about the time that Woods and Waters came into the picture.  Retiring in 1997, Jim has expanded his outdoor experience and now has granddaughters Kelsey and Casey to bring along in the Mountaineer tradition.  They enjoy fishing now and hopefully, the shooting sports in the future.  As Vice President and banquet chairman in 1998, he was instrumental in bringing the Annual Banquet to the American Croatian Lodge. Jim, currently, is working on strengthening ties with other outdoor groups for the Woods and Water Club.

MAN OF THE YEAR AWARD:    Bob J. Askew

The Woods and Waters Club of Northern Ohio is pleased to present the “Man of the Year” award to Bob J. Askew.  Bob has been a long time sportsman and activist. He is a past president of South Cuyahoga Sportsmen Association, the League of Ohio Sportsmen and the Ohio Wildlife Federation.  He is a longtime member of the National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited, Wild Turkey Federation, German Shorthaired Club, Pheasant’s Forever, Woods and Waters Club and Cardinal Sportsman Club.  He was appointed as a member of Governor Celeste’s Commission on Volunteerism in 1985.

Bob noted that most of his efforts for the past twenty years has been with the T.I.P. (Turn in a Poacher) program.  He was one of the four founders of this successful program and serves as the Chairman of the Board, President and CEO.  Pat, his wife, is an ardent supporter of his efforts as are his four children.  He has worked with the Game Protectors Association as an honorary member.  He believes strongly that we should do what we can to support our Division of Wildlife and Department of Natural Resources to conserve

and protect our wildlife and natural resources for our future generations.
